Republican Debate Sponsored by The Western Republican Leadership Conference
54Republican GOP Candidates
Review
Notably Huntsman boycotted debate. I think he is out.
They started with the argument between the Income Taxes versus and Sales Tax. I have personally watched Herman Cain flip flop on whether he believes this tax will raise taxes on the middle class and the poor. And since Cain seems to flip back and forth whether he is raising taxes on the middle class and the poor I would submit that perhaps Herman Cain doesn't understand his own tax plans.
Michelle Bachmann is for increasing taxes. A flat tax is a regressive tax on the poor and the middle class. Why would Michelle Bachmann be punting for trickle down economic theory? It is a theory that has never ever been proven.
Ron Paul admitted it was a regressive tax. And while I don't find Paul to be a viable candidate he sometimes has a lot of common sense.
Romney and Perry agree that the USA should be energy independent.
Rick Santorum kept interrupting Romney when he was speaking and broke the debate forum. It was unprofessional and spoke to Santorum's desperation. I think his campaign is over as well.
Michelle Bachmann invoke Obama's name about 8 times which meant she had more blame for the current president then actually ideas how to govern the country if elected.
The Republican nominees kept tearing into each other and interrupting each other. Rick Perry accused Mitt Romney of hiring an illegal alien. And then Perry refused to allow Mitt Romney defend himself. There were moments of mean spiritness which was rather unbecoming of the Republican Nominees. In the end Romney hired a lawn service and they had hired an illegal which upon discovering Romney let them go.
Thank God there was a National Security Question. Republicans are historically the party of National Security not Free Trade too bad everyone in the GOP doesn't remember.
In Conclusion
I watched this during many tornado watches so I kept getting emergency warnings so I am reporting on what I saw. I think the debates have reached a point of being counter productive to the Republican Party. The candidates are losing their cool and acting uncivilized to each other.
Michelle Bachmann, Newt Gringrich, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman will not receive the nomination. They are establishment candidates and this is an anti-establishment year. Herman Cain is also out of the race because he is suggesting higher flat regressive taxes on the middle class and the poor and he seems unclear as to whether he actually understands his tax plan will harm the middle class and the poor.
Perry is also slipping when he is losing his temper. No one wants a president who can't keep his cool.
Romney is the clear winner of the debates and it looks like he will get the GOP nomination. I would prefer he address issues which I think are relevant but the debates only provide for limited questions.

I think the term you are looking for is not "triple down," but "trickle-down" economics, long used in a pejorative way to mock how rich people supposedly think tax breaks in their favor eventually help everyone.
JT, while I don't necessarily assess each performance exactly as you do, your points all seem well taken, based on astute observation and fair analysis. This kind of objective approach can, I suggest, do more good for you and your readers. As you say, we expect no less from our would-be leaders.
The problem with Ron Paul is that he's a republican in name only. In truth, Paul is a libertarian which is why he'll never get the nomination. I have little respect for Paul for that reason. If you're a libertarian then run as a libertarian. Instead he knew that he had to become a republican just to win election to the House. He couldn't do it as a libertarian. But he has very little in common with today's republican party. The people in his home district may not have had a problem with a libertarian calling himself a republican but it's clear that primary voters don't support him that much because they know what he's really about.
Paul needs to stop pretending to be something he's not. Run as a libertarian and let everyone see what libertarians are all about. But Paul already knows what would happen which is why he continues to masquerade as a republican.
Am I going to get in trouble? I am an Independent. I see no clear winner or good choice. I really enjoyed the breakdown, though. I had to laugh . . . hope I was supposed to. I like Charlie Crist, but he is done. I like Kendrick Meek, but he won't let go of a Democratic platform that doesn't fit who he is. Kendrick has personal depth, but no killer instinct. Hey, that's Florida stuff. I don't think either one would do well in the next election.
The South doesn't have to rise again, it looks like the North is going to fall. Where is Lyndon La Rouche when you need him?
You Are what the people are looking for in a representative, not politically polish, but Ms Palin wasn't Polish. Your hubs express a desire to educate and impower to people. Pray and move, or don't move.6

I didn't see this debate so I can't comment specifically. I do agree that Romney will probably get the nomination. I am not a big Romney fan so I am not saying that as a plug for "my guy."
I disagree with your statement about Bachmann. Her invoking the Presidents name is more strategy then a lack of a plan. She is wanting to bring focus that she is not running against the other candidates, but to defeat Obama. While I don't think she has a chance I personally like how she handles herself.
Ron Paul does make sense at time. The best thing he could do is speak less. When he expounds on points is where he starts showing that he is nutty in some areas. I don't think he has a chance either, although he does have some big supporters pushing him this time like the NIA.
I agree with your review of Santorum. Although, he gets no air time so it's an all or nothing crap shoot. He might as well get out even though he is probably the most conservative, moral, and All-American!
I would rule out Newt yet. He has a lot of baggage, but he slowly and consistently presses forward. He is by far the most intelligent. He understands the "whole" world better then any of them and if you really look into the way he would govern he actually has a mix of being and insider and an outsider. He is an insider because he was speaker and so forth, but he is an outsider as he is very pro listening to the American people. Look at his organization American Solutions.
I don't think Cain will be able to hang onto his recent surge, although I like him a lot. What I really like about him is that he is Reagan like in that he surrounds himself with qualified people. I think this makes up for his lack of knowledge of the world outside the USA. However, I agree with some of your points about 9-9-9. While I like this plan in theory I think it would eventually be disastrous.

Hi Max,
I think that might have been a Freudian slip as I feel like we are tripling down on debt with the new stimulus package but I will review and edit. Thank you for pointing that out to me.
All My Best,
