Hubpages: Patrons of the Arts Contests

There are only a few more days to enter your last selections in the Hub pages Parton of the Arts contest which ends November 21, 2011 at noon Pacific Time. It has been a lot of fun participating in this contest as well as rather challenging as I wrote out of genre in order to enter. But it was rather healthy to extent myself out of my comfort zone in writing and into the unknown. As part of the contest I had to study poetry. My son will probably never forgive the Hub pages staff as I made him learn with me but such is life. And I have a new found appreciation for poetry which I had never had before. I never realized it was based on a Mathematical scheme and now that I have written a few poems I have a deeper sense of appreciation for all poetry. This would also include a greater appreciation for musical lyrics for he most part I never really noticed. I was not a person who ever listened to the words of a song but to the notes. Therefore after writing poetry I realized lyrics are poetry set to music. So I have learned a lot from the poetry portion of the contest.

And I ventured back into creative writing specifically fiction writing which I had abandoned before I went into graduate school. And while it was really hard for me to write short stories as I am a book person I cut everything way down and scaled it all back so it would fit the parameters of the contests.

My first story is about the adventures of two young American girls in Paris. And I really enjoyed writing it but would have preferred to have it a small novella or book but that again I edit it down for the contest. This ended up being an eight part series.

The second creative writing entry was The Wishing Well which was a fictional science fiction tale I had planned on writing in screen play format. And I had to seriously cut and edit down a lot of the material in this story as well in order to enter it into the contest. But it was also a story I enjoyed sharing with you.

I have learned a lot about the generosity of the writer’s on Hubpages. They are extremely kind people and I am so grateful for their input. Without the reader the writer is no one. And that is always a humbling reality of being a writer whether it is here on Hubpages or on the New York’s best seller list.

I would like to encourage everyone to enter into the next contest Hubpages has or enter into this contest in the last few days. I know I have learned a lot from just being a participant and for that I am very grateful. Now I have a few more poems to publish and then I will be through with all my entries. There is still time though if you have any last minute entries you would like to make.
