Homemade Ice Cream with a Hand Mixer?

I was doing research on cooking deserts for my son. He is very thin and I am always trying to get him to gain or maintain his weight. I spend my days cooking for him and dreaming up new and inventive ways of enticing him to eat. He eats a lot of calories a day but I require he eat whole organic foods with minimal food processing.

So in my research I came across these how to make homemade ice cream YouTube videos. What is Ice Cream but frozen cream whipped, right? So as I was watching the videos and I decided I would make an ice cream which I knew my son would love. He occasionally eats chocolate but it is not his favorite nor is vanilla. Ginger is one of his very favorite roots and he loves cinnamon and vanilla.

I had to find the hook so I went with some non-traditional ice cream ingredients that both of us love and I hope you love as well. This recipe is really simple and takes about ten minutes to make. It makes two gallons of ice creams for roughly $7. It is easy to make as you will see in the videos. This article is more about the unique twist we put on ice cream and how much my son loves it.

Ingredients to Make 2 Gallons of Ginger Ice Cream

  1. Pint of Organic Heavy Whip[ping Cream
  2. Cinnamon (3 Tablespoons)
  3. 1/4 cup minced fresh Ginger
  4. Vanilla (2 Tablespoons)
  5. I can sweetened Eagle Brand condensed Milk
  6. Light Brown Sugar (1/4)
  7. Two Smashed Bananas (Alex's last minute contribution to the ice cream)

How Long Does It Take To Make?

If you chop the ginger really slowly then grade it but the whole process should not take you longer than ten minutes from start to putting the ice cream in the freezer.

My son prefers this ice cream to the store bought ones because it has his favorite ingredients. In our area they do not sell ginger ice cream at the market and until I did research for this article, I did not know that other people were making it with conventional ice cream makers.

You probably are wondering if the ginger is too strong raw and minced which is a good question. If you do not love ginger then grade it. We eat ginger root in our home raw so we do not mind little minced pieces of ginger in our ice cream but each to their own. It is a variable for you to consider before making it.

So How Do I Get Started?

First you need a cold metal bowl. I have a metal bowl I place in the freezer before I start this project. You only need it in the freezer about an hour before you begin.

Second you pour the cream in and with your hand mixer on high you mix for five minutes. It will create whipped cream.

The 2 banana's, ginger and cinnamon I am not counting as they are not my primary concern in this calorie count. Remember a pint is about 800 g of sugar of ice cream. This is the total for two gallons of ice cream. Portion control should be exerc

So Making Your Signature Ice Cream

It would be my honor if you made our favorite recipe for homemade ice cream but the purpose of this article is to get you to be creative with your favorite ingredients and make your signature ice cream. I believe we are all different for a reason. It is so we can discover ourselves, what we love, and share it with the world. That is the inherent intent of this article.

You can easily make chocolate just by adding coco power but you can also get really creative with all kinds of different fruits and ingredients.

I would love to hear from anyone who tried to make this recipe or a variation of it and how it turned out. I think I have made every mistake possible preparing this. Once I did not get sweetened milk and that was a disaster. So be careful which milk you get. I have added cookie dough that was safe to eat in the ice cream and Oreo cookies because my son loves them. Once we made one with Peppermint Patties. Peppermint patties are a bit hard frozen.

This article is about giving you a blank canvas and having you make your own signature ice cream. But it will honor us if you make ours too. We would love to hear from you. Let me know how it turns out.

Final Thoughts

This was a very difficult hub article to write because the recipe is so simple. It only took ten minutes and superfluous writing was not required. However, I do not want my audience to feel cheated. It is just simple and the whole purpose is for you to create your own signature ice cream or at least make your own ice cream.

Before eating you may have to let the ice cream sit out a bit. It has air in it but is still rather condensed. Let it sit on the counter for a bit and you will be able to scoop it out readily. I make this for my son who needs the calories however for adults I suggest exercising portion control. One scoop is enough. Just because it is Homemade and organic does not mean that it will not put weight on you.

A little bit in the homemade ice cream world goes a very long way.
