If you are elderly, sick or disabled handicapped parking permist are available for you at your local Driver's Liscense Bureau or tax Collector's Office. You will need several items to obtain the permit and it is wise you do as the fine for parking in a handicapped parking space without a permit is $250 and you car can be towed and impounded.
First, you must go to either the tax collector's office or the Driver's liscense bureau to obtain a form for your doctor to declare you disabled.
Second, you must return the form completed to the appropriate office.
Third, you have to wait for the clerks to create an account or attach the parking permit to your liscense. In my case, my son is disabled with Autism so the parking permit is only good when he is in the car. I am quite glad too because I would not want a benefit to go to a non-disabled person such as myself.
It took about a week for me to get the form, have the doctor fill it out and then about an hour at the tax collector's offie and the permit was issued. It was free and easy and it has made all the difference in our lives. Before we would have to park far away from places in high traffic areas. I had to hold my son's hand pretty tight as cars sped by. I still hold my son's hand but not as tightly because things are more readily accessed.
In a time when one could literally complain about everything in government, I am here to report my personal gratitude for the efficiency in serving the disabled population with handicapped parking permits by my local government.
In the Event You See a Non-Handicapped Person Using a Handicapped Parking Permit
We live in Florida which is a tourist state and it is tourist season. Sadly, many tourists park where they want knowing they will not be around to attend court in the event they are ticket. Traffic offense rarely are enforced across state lines. So now that we have our handicapped parking permit after 11 years of not having one, my son is able to park closer to stores when a tourist is not parked in a handicapped parking space. If they are handicapped they would require their own decal sign to hand from the mirror. They don't have one and they still take the parking spaces. The state of Florida could and should make a fortune off of this. Every single person parking illegally can be held accountable for $250 fines, court fees and they could even impound their car.. I have gone so far as to take pictures of these vehicles without the handicapped parking permit on my cell phone and turn them into the cops. I have a whole collect of these photos now. I may actually post them on the internet. Not here of course but another site of the worst handicapped parking offenders. Because of the state of Florida is going to let them break the law then they should at least be held accountable for violating the law in a public forum. And I own the copyright ot every picture taken. So before anyone considers parking in a handicapped parking space because it is a terrible waste of space. Think again. I am out here with my child and those spaces legally belong to us. It is a moral, ethical and most of all legal offense to park in a handicapped parking space when you are an abled bodied person.
