Dinner with the Ivy League

Dinner with the Ivy League

Throughout my years for some inextricable reason I always am surrounded by the Ivy League. I have no idea if there are just more of them or we secretly seek each other out but somehow we always end up together. You might think this has only happened in my life when I have been extraordinarily wealthy. That could not be further from the truth. Over the holidays my kind neighbor a graduate of Stanford with a graduate degree from Yale has been kind enough to keep me company through the holidays. Standford and Yale are not my normal Ivy League crowds. I am more of a Cornell, Columbia and Harvard kind of girl but I always enjoy my time with the Ivy League. He is a dear gentlemen who has recently lost a family member as well.

What is it like Dinning with the Ivy League?

Given I have dined at the top economically and the bottom now it is pretty much the same. It is am amazing club which I have never actually been admitted to but I always seem to make the invitation list. Perhaps because I know who Surkano is and where on the French Riviera the estate is located. But that is the best part about being in this particular club. We have all read the same books and traveled to the same places. We have all tasted the finer things in life and speak other languages. The friend which kept me company over the Holidays lived in France for many years and enjoyed a great deal of time in Greece. I have been to both countries and understood what he was talking about entirely.

I have noticed when I am with the Ivy League there is a comfort level in which I can rely on them and they can rely upon me. And if I don’t know something they are always so gracious to explain it and I share this with them as well. And that comfort level is not there with people outside of the Ivy League.

Besides great conversation and a few liberal jokes it is just wonderful company. It is exceptionally civilized which seems to be missing from today’s society. And this is how it has always been when I have congregated with my Ivy League counter parts and why I encourage those that are interested to apply. It is a very different culture in which there is co-operation to help each other advance. It is the way I believe all society should be instead of constantly competing with each other for a few morsels.

Don’t get me wrong sometimes there is spirited debate. On this past holiday this particular friend happened to be active in the Democratic Party. I am a died hard Republican. But when education is factored into the conversation there is really nothing to argue about. We sometimes debate back and forth but it is so light hearted anyone who would hear it wouldn’t even notice it is a debate.

So in essence it is quite lovely and civilized. I highly recommend it. It is no wonder the Ivy League lives better then the rest of the country as they are busy helping each other maintain the majority of wealth in this country instead of fighting over the morsels left over.

The Secrets of the Leagues

The Ivy Leagues, not unlike secret societies, have secrets known only to people involved in those leagues. There are truism that are universal and good to know in a pinch and everyday. Just by knowing people from the Ivy League you can gain great insight into understanding how the world works and how to make the world work for you. But you have to be astute enough to keep up intellectually. And you have to listen more then you speak.

The truth is intellect craves intellect and civility craves civility. And when you know the secrets of the League and you can keep them then you are usually at least invited to their parties if not accepted entirely.

And I can’t recommend joining enough as it is a very different experience and culture.
